The Saltire Society’s role as an advocate, as a celebrant of all that is best in our national cultural life, has a purpose. It is a reminder, an encouragement and a provocation to politicians, policy makers, public bodies, and the public of the importance of this asepct of our lives.

For the new Saltire Series we have invited individuals to spark fresh thinking, ignite debate and challenge our orthodoxies, through the publication of short commissioned essays. The Editorial note from a pamphlet produced in 1942 is still a strong expression of the proposition.

‘They will express the considered judgements of their own authors, to whom complete freedom has been given; and are not to be taken as representing the policy of the Saltire Society, whose objective is to promote that free and informed discussion without which no sound policy for Scotland’s future can be shaped.’

We have built important partnerships in this work that connect us to a wide constituency of specialist and public interest.

The pamphlets are available on publication in limited edition print with a new cover design by Scottish artist Alasdair Gray.

Asscociated authors events are planned for some of the series. Details will be avaialable on our Events page.
