With Gillebrìde MacMillan and Alex Dold
Inspired by Scotland’s tumultuous history of ‘treachery, betrayal and murder’, the Outlander series has fired unprecedented global interest in Highland dress, Scottish history and Gaelic culture. In 2023, Glasgow University invited fans, and experts to come together – in a location for the television series – to explore the work in depth. Their presentations form the core of the landmark book Outlander and Scotland, discussing the storytelling, the characters, the real histories behind the fiction and the questions of gender and power it raises.
We are delighted to invite you to join us at Eden Court, Inverness on Saturday 28th November 2026 at 2.30pm to hear from editor Gillebrìde MacMillan and contributor Alex Dold on the book, their experiences of ‘Outlander’, and to answer your questions.

Dr Gillebrìde MacMillan is a musician, academic and writer. His connection to Outlander includes a stint as Gwyllyn the Bard in series one and he has served as Gaelic consultant for the series. He is a Senior Lecturer in Gaelic and Celtic at Glasgow University and was part of the team with the original ‘Outlandish’ idea to host the first international conference on Outlander in 2023.
Dr Alex Dold is a literary scholar and historian. Her PhD explores the Outlander novels as public history and she was joined at her graduation ceremony by Diana Gabaldon who was awarded an honorary doctorate. She teaches Comparative Literature at the University of Glasgow.
