"The Fishermen's Clavie" by Dr Fiona-Jane Brown The Burning of the Clavie at Burghead, Morayshire, is a well-established calendar custom celebrated on ‘Old Hogmanay’, 11 January, reputed to bring luck for the year to the village. However, as evidenced from kirk session records, many other fishing communities "burned the clavie" at times of poor fishing. Dr Brown is an independent researcher and author. She received her MLitt and doctorate at the University of Aberdeen in 2005 and 2010 respectively. Her main research interests are supernatural / spiritual beliefs in Scottish fishing communities and the role they play in identity, as well as the local culture, folklore and history of NE Scotland. She has published three local history books with by Black & White of Edinburgh. Dr Brown is also the founder of Hidden Aberdeen Tours, Aberdeen’s only walking tour/ street theatre company.
