second recording of Scottish Audio ClassicsFor the second in the new series of Saltire Scottish Audio Classics, the Society has chosen a series of Scottish 'wonder tales' including Kate Crackernuts, The Wee Bannock and the monster tale of Assipattle and the Mester Stoorworm. The stories, performed here by a group of professional actors, are available on CD or cassette and contain over an hour of wonder for adults and children alike. In all there are seven stories which, as the cover notes claim, are ideal for "quiet listening at the fireside on a cold winter's evening or to amuse children on a summer holiday to distant destinations". More importantly perhaps from the Society's point of view the recording will help to introduce the richness of the Scottish folk tradition to a wider and younger audience and in so doing help preserve it for future generations. The wonder tales were chosen by Marillyn Gray who along with Marjory McNeill adapted them for this recording. Tony Dilworth, Edinburgh Branch secretary is the narrator and the part of Kate Crackernuts is played by Astrid Wilson, a very promising young Scottish actress who has already established herself in theatre, radio and television. Along with well known performers like Norman Fraser, John McColl and Sarah Rowntree, they give new life to tales which have thrilled and amused generations of Scots and brought something of Scotland to people from other countries and traditions. The recordings were made at the Sound Café, Midlothian, by David Gray and are available to Saltire members at the reduced price of £10 for the CD and £5 for the cassette.
