For the first in their series, Saltire Scottish Audio Classics, the Saltire Society have chosen the lyric drama 'The Sea King's Daughter' by George Mackay Brown, the widely acclaimed Orcadian writer who draws on the legends and mythology of Northern cultures to express modern times against pre-historic images of an island people. The resonances of traditional ballad and saga forms are heard in this uniquely moving and imaginative play about the ill-fated Margaret, Maid of Norway.
The story unfolds with a sea journey on the ship 'Boreas'. The elemental and timeless nature of the sea and storm is expressed in the strong rhythms of the language, performed by a group of well-known Scottish actors, and in the music of clarsach and bodhran specially composed for this production by Corrina Hewat
