A Scottish Postbag

This is an updated version of the very successful 1986 edition in which the Scottish poet George Bruce and writer and historian Paul Scott compiled a selection of Scottish letters covering eight centuries and involving many of the great historical, literary and political figures in Scotland’s past. William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, David Hume, John Knox, James Boswell, Robert Burns, David Livingstone,Thomas Carlyle, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Ramsay MacDonald, and Hugh MacDiarmid are among the I 50 famous Scots, nearly 350 letters in all. Together they illuminate Scotland’s history in a very direct and entertaining way. The editors have added a number of letters from the last decade.

George Bruce, one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, was the winner of the Saltire Book of the Year award in 1999 for his collection, Pursuit.

Paul Henderson Scott, an authority on Scottish literary culture, has written or edited many books on the subject including Scotland: A Concise Cultural History.
