Highland Branch, Orkney Visit
The Highland Branch had an extremely successful two day visit to Orkney on the Weekend beginning the 10th June 2006.
On the first day the Branch visited a mixture of both Neolithic and modern history places of interest. Visiting the Cam Liath Broch at Golspie, the Emigrants statue at Helmsdale in Sutherland and the Whaligoe Steps in Caithness on their way to the Ferry at Gils bay. Then, once the Pentland Firth had been crossed the Branch visited the Tomb of the Eagles, the Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel. After diner a trip to Stomness was also fit in.
The second day of the Orkney Visit began with a viewing of the Ring ofBrodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness, and continued with visits to Maeshowe, Brough of Birsay and Skaill House. Before the journey back to the Highlands, the Branch finished the visit by taking a tour of the St Magnus Cathedral, the Earl's Palace and Bishop's Palace in Kirkwall.
The trip was enjoyed immensely by the branch due not only to the beautiful places they visited, but also because of the welcoming staff at the hotel, the enthusiastic workers at each different archaeological site and the tour guides with their vast knowledge of these sites.
A big thank must be made to Mr Sinclair Dunnett, the Principal of the Puffin Express in Orkney for allowing the Branch to engage his services for the planning and executing of the Branches guided tour.
