Saltire Society Award for Documentary Film

Results
Anna Jones The Society’s Award for Young Filmmakers has been won by Anna Jones for her short documentary Sky High. The Award was made in association with the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Sky High was chosen from a short list of five films made by young filmmakers and shown at the Film Theatre during the Festival.
Sky High tells the story of Davie, an Edinburgh roofer who works high above the streets among the myriad slates and chimneys of the Old Town. It is Anna’s first solo project and was made with the help of a Small Wonders’ award from Edinburgh Mediabase. ‘It was’, says Anna, ‘a long often challenging and difficult process ... we were often scrambling around on tenement roofs without much room to manoeuvre.’ Another major problem was editing 10 hours of footage down to ten minutes. Her most exciting day’s filming was at night: ‘Davie had floodlights to illuminate his work and we stayed until early next day to witness an amazing view of a misty blue Edinburgh at dawn from high above the city.’
Thanking the Society for the Award, Anna said that the £1000 would go towards filmmaking equipment, including a computer for editing and a digital video camera. She said that Sky High had been selected to show at the ‘Best of the Edinburgh Festival’ event at London’s leading independent cinema, the Curzon Soho, in November.
We hope, as John Grierson would wish, that the award made in his name will help this particular talented young woman to develop her career and that we will hear more of her and her work in the future.
