Edinburgh Air Control Tower Lands Engineering Award

Edinburgh Airport Air Traffic Control Tower has landed a major engineering award. The Saltire Society in association with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has given this year's Award for Civil Engineering to the Control Tower for its embodiment of outstanding civil engineering talent in Scotland.

The Award was made in recognition of the excellence in design and construction of this innovative and iconic structure which facilitates the expansion of Edinburgh Airport and raises its profile. The judges praised the 57m tall Tower as a "very strong presence" which "enhances the landscape".

The structure also incorporates ingenious design features allowing maintenance access without disruption to air traffic control services. The continuing growth of Edinburgh Airport required a new control tower to enable safe and cost effective delivery of air traffic control over the next 25 years.

ICE Scotland Manager, Derek Elder, commented:

"Edinburgh Airport Air Traffic Control Tower is a deserving winner of this year's Saltire Award for Civil Engineering. It is representative of the great engineering and design talent that we have in Scotland and which these Awards aim to bring to public recognition."

Managing Director of Edinburgh Airport, Richard Jeffrey, said:

"We are extremely proud to accept this award for the tower, which truly is a great example of ingenuity in engineering. As well as being exciting and distinctive on a visual level the tower has enhanced our operation, delivering the extra capacity needed for our ever increasing number of passengers. This is a fantastic achievement and testament to the skills of the design and construction teams involved."

The Tower is owned by BAA and operated by National Air Traffic Control Services. The architect was Reid Architecture, the structure was designed by Arup Scotland and construction was by Laing O'Rourke.

The Saltire Civil Engineering Awards will be presented on the 12th October at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow.
