THE 2009 ARTS AND CRAFTS IN ARCHITECTURE AWARDS ANNOUNCED
This years Ceremony was held on 19th October at the Saltire Society's Headquarters.
Two Commendations were awarded.
Excavation by Kate Whiteford commissioned by Eden Court Theatre
In 2005 the artist was invited to propose a land drawing for hte grounds of Eden Court Theatre.
The location was the former garden of the restored Bishop's Eden Palace and is overlooked by the
newly restored theatre building.
As the main path to the theatre cuts across the site the artist incorporated the path in the work by
making it follow the curved lines of hte drawing. Where the path crosses the drawing, it becomes a
granite causeway, at which point the land drawings can be viewed at close range, similar to the
viewing paths which traverse archeological sites.
The concept of the work is that of a fictional 'excavation' in the grounds of Bishop's Eden Palace.
THe drawing of archeological remains which have been uncovered during the duikding works is based on
the incised images on the reverse ofhte carved stona at GLamis Manse. At ground level, the sinuous
curves of the serpent are elegantly distorted and exaggerated to be viewed from above.
To reach the theatre one follows the path until the granite causeway crossed the white drawing and
black mondo grass, creating a significant moment of transition: crossing the drawing signifies
leaving the real world behind andentering the workd of dreams and imagination.
Awards are made for works of art and craft designed to enhance and enrich buildings.
